Stress has become so woven into daily life that most people no longer notice how much it's actually affecting them. It's not just a mental experience, chronic stress and nervous system dysregulation have measurable effects on gut function, hormones, immunity, sleep, metabolism, skin, cognition, and long-term health more broadly.

My approach to stress, sleep, and nervous system health looks for what's actually driving the dysregulation in each person, whether that's relationship to stress, adrenal patterns, glucose dysregulation, hormonal shifts, gut dysfunction, nutrient status, or ongoing lifestyle demands, rather than offering generic advice to "just relax more."

How chronic stress affects the body

The nervous system has two primary states: sympathetic (fight or flight) and parasympathetic (rest and digest). Ideally, these move in dynamic balance, activating when needed and returning to baseline once the demand passes. When stress becomes chronic, the system can get stuck in a more sympathetic-leaning state, a pattern of ongoing low-level activation that, over time, may be linked to a wide range of health concerns, including:

  • Sleep quality and the ability to switch off

  • Gut function, microbiome balance, and digestive symptoms

  • Hormone production, particularly cortisol, progesterone, and thyroid hormones

  • Immune resilience

  • Weight and metabolic functio, elevated cortisol has been associated with abdominal fat storage

  • Skin health, where stress is a recognized contributor to inflammatory skin conditions

  • Mood, anxiety, and emotional regulation

  • Cognitive function, focus, and memory

  • Blood sugar regulation and cravings

  • Energy production and recovery

  • Inflammation throughout the body

Areas I commonly support

Stress and adrenal patterns. When the adrenal system is asked to produce stress hormones over a long period, the HPA axis, the hormonal communication system governing the stress response, can become dysregulated. This often shows up as exhaustion, reduced stress resilience, salt cravings, disrupted sleep, and a sense of not recovering no matter how much rest you get.

Anxiety. Anxiety is one of the more common things I see, and one where a physiological, root-cause approach can genuinely help. Gut health, blood sugar regulation, neurotransmitter balance, nutrient status, hormonal shifts, and chronic stress can all contribute to anxiety in real, measurable ways.

Sleep problems and insomnia. Poor sleep is rarely just a habit issue. Cortisol patterns, hormonal shifts, blood sugar instability, nutrient status, gut health, and nervous system activation all play a role in both falling asleep and sleep quality, identifying the specific contributor behind your particular sleep disruption tends to be the key to actually resolving it.

Chronic fatigue and brain fog. These often travel together with stress and nervous system dysregulation. I cover both in more depth on my Fatigue, Brain Fog & Low Energy page, since the same investigative approach applies.

Focus and attention. Whether or not there's a formal diagnosis, difficulties with attention, focus, and executive function are worth investigating from a physiological angle. Dopamine metabolism, iron status, gut health, blood sugar, sleep, and hormonal influences can all affect cognitive performance and attention.

Nervous system regulation. For those where nervous system dysregulation seems to be the common thread connecting several symptoms, I look at vagal tone, HPA axis function, neurotransmitter balance, gut-brain axis function, and the nutritional foundations that support a well-regulated nervous system.

The gut-brain connection

The gut and nervous system communicate constantly in both directions through what's known as the gut-brain axis, a network involving the vagus nerve, neurotransmitter production, immune signaling, and the microbiome. A large majority of the body's serotonin is produced in the gut. Gut dysbiosis has been linked to mood, anxiety, cognitive function, and stress resilience, and the relationship runs both ways, chronic stress can also disrupt the microbiome, increase intestinal permeability, and worsen digestive symptoms.

For many patients, addressing gut health turns out to be one of the more meaningful levers for nervous system support.

Stress, hormones, and the bigger picture

Cortisol doesn't operate in isolation. Chronic stress has been associated with suppressed progesterone, impaired thyroid hormone conversion, disrupted estrogen metabolism, and insulin dysregulation, meaning stress is rarely just a nervous system issue on its own. It tends to ripple into hormone balance, thyroid health, weight and metabolism, skin health, and inflammation, which is why I try to look at the broader picture rather than treating symptoms in isolation.
